Yayasan Agri Sustineri Indonesia (YASI) is proud to have participated in the Agriculture Insurance Workshop organized by the Ministry of National Development Planning (Bappenas) in collaboration with JICA in Jakarta. This workshop aimed to strengthen Indonesia’s agricultural insurance system as part of the Indonesia–Japan partnership in supporting national food security. YASI shared its experience in implementing innovative agricultural insurance programs, including the use of technology and group-based models to improve smallholder farmers’ access to financial protection.
The discussions during the workshop produced strategic recommendations to develop a more inclusive agricultural insurance policy that meets the actual needs of Indonesian farmers. Participants agreed that collaboration among the government, private sector, and civil society is essential in building a more effective and sustainable system. YASI also proposed the development of flexible insurance products tailored to various agricultural commodities in Indonesia, along with the crucial role of technology in enhancing the system. One of the key takeaways from the workshop was the emphasis on farmer education. To ensure farmers better understand the benefits and mechanisms of agricultural insurance, more intensive educational programs are needed. In addition, the use of technology to accelerate claims processing and simplify verification was highlighted as critical, enabling farmers to receive timely assistance in times of risk.
Overall, the workshop provided YASI with a valuable opportunity to strengthen its network with diverse stakeholders and collaborate in shaping policies that enhance the resilience of Indonesia’s agricultural sector. With the recommendations produced, we are optimistic that a more efficient, affordable, and inclusive agricultural insurance system can be established—ultimately supporting a stronger food security framework for Indonesia’s future.
